You want more volume in your hair? Here’s how!

27 October 2016

Everybody wants full, voluminous hair – even men. But very few of us are blessed with a lion’s mane. A boost is needed.

Hair care shouldn’t be complicated.

The first step is washing the hair. A healthy scalp is the foundation for strong hair. Chose mild shampoos that won’t irritate the scalp. If you wash your hair daily, alternate between a nourishing shampoo and a volumising shampoo. Massage conditioners and treatments into the lengths only, not the hairline, as they will weigh it down, making it look flat.

The next step is styling. As natural volume starts at the hairline, styling products should also only be applied there. For best results use them on towel dried hair. Then dry your hair using a hairdryer, as the heat will fluff up the hair. Spray volume hairspray onto the roots and pull the hair upwards strand by strand. Blow dry your hair in sections against the direction of growth. Dry your hair thoroughly, but don’t apply too much heat, as this will stress the hair and the scalp. Tip: use brushes and rollers to style your hair, and wait until the hair is cool before you remove them to add extra volume.

If you colour your hair, you should choose lighter colours for very fine and thin hair, so that the contrast between the scalp and the hair colour isn’t as strong.

Good to know

Products for more volume

When it comes to care and beauty products, we like to apply the principle: A lot helps a lot. But in most cases this is counter-productive. The right amount applied correctly is key.

  • Styling sprays are used on the roots of the hair.
  • Hairspray for better hold should be applied from at least 30 cm away and in a swaying movement.
  • Volume mousse is ideal for the ends of the hair. Remember as a rule of thumb: a mandarin-sized dollop is enough for short hair, and three times as much for long hair.

Last but not least a beneficial tip: dry shampoo magically transforms limp hair into fragrant, full hair in the blink of an eye. Thanks to its powdery, fine consistency it absorbs excess oil and increases hold. An insider trick used at fashion shows.
